Tradition

2018 Installation

48” x 72” x 60”

Other people's expectations, whether they were mine or driven into me by the people I surround myself with, were always nagging in the back of my mind of what my work should be. Tradition was a comment on the societal expectations of women, more specifically artistic women. Not only do people constantly ask me how I will make money, I get the occasional look that I work in only a DIY or crafty manner thus making my work seem insignificant compared to the stigma of “high gallery art”. Art that is only functional or even traditionally created for beauty only. This hand built loom was made out of love for the traditional arts that women take part in but also a reminder of the ambition a woman has outside of traditional means.
